Gig Nights at Hidden Rooms

‘Gig Nights’ at Hidden Rooms are our primary showcase events. Each involves live music, affordable drinks, a welcoming and exciting social atmosphere, and the JazzSoc favourite, the Open Jam. Our ‘Gig Nights’ feature performances from stellar lineups: the top student bands in Cambridge, and professional bands from across the UK.

  • A plain text version of our access statement can be found here.

JazzSoc Gig Night events involve live music for the duration of the event.

The venue has two rooms, an events room which is crowded and has live music, and a cocktail lounge which is more spacious and has some quieter music playing: sometimes live, sometimes recorded. The music in the events room is loud but not excessively.

There will be no strobe lights but there may be occasional flash photography. The lighting in the events room is dim and the lighting in the cocktail lounge is moderately dim.

There is not a quiet room at the event, but the cocktail lounge will be quieter than the events room and it is possible to take a break from the event by exiting the venue and spending time in the allocated outside area before returning inside.

Bathrooms: There are female, gender neutral and male bathrooms.

Entry to the venue requires descending one flight of stairs. Once inside everything is mostly on one level but the bar is a few steps lower than the seating.

    Wheelchair access:

Information from the venue, Hidden Rooms:

“Disabled Access: Access to HIDDEN ROOMS is not suitable for disabled persons unless assisted. Once inside, a majority of the floor space is on one level and toilet facilities may be dedicated and allocated for disabled persons' use on request.”

Please be in touch with us on FB, via our email camjazzsoc@gmail.com, or directly with our inclusions officer if you have any questions about accessibility at JazzSoc. We would love to do our best to make JazzSoc accessible for you.

  • The JazzSoc Open Jam has been welcomed by jazz musicians across the university, because it provides a space where players can improvise, experiment and interact with each other, all in an exciting but low-stakes environment.

Any musician is welcome to sign up to play, and they are then rotated in as fair a manner as possible. When a group of musicians have their turn, they are all invited up to the front, and they decide what to play together. The jam typically begins with playing the main section of the piece, i.e. the head, and then players take it in turns to take solos, before returning to the head.

The structure might be agreed by the players in advance. If not, the structure is improvised, in which case everything is dynamic and operates via little nods of the head and hand gestures.

The open jam is a very different experience to other types of performance, but it’s a lot of fun and very rewarding!

Find a full guide to the Open Jam here.

  • Please apply here to perform as a headline band at a JazzSoc Gig Night.

Please apply here to perform in the bar at one of our events (solos, duos, and some trios), including at our Gig Nights.
